What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a medical practice that developed in Ancient China. It involves the insertion of very fine disposable needles into specific points on the surface of the body. When these points are stimulated, they have a therapeutic effect, restoring health and preventing disease. Today, many additional forms of stimulation are incorporated including herbs, electricity, magnets, and lasers. The aim is to adjust the “vital energy”

How does Acupuncture Work?

Western science knows that acupuncture triggers the production of endorphins, the body’s natural pain killers. Acupuncture also positively affects the endocrine and nervous systems, helping the body to achieve a state of balance or homeostasis. In Western medicine, however, the body is understood to function in terms of biochemical interactions, and the treatment is generally biochemical, using drugs. It is therefore difficult to understand acupuncture using concepts derived from Western allopathic medicine.

Chinese medicine is based on the concept of chi (“Qi”) or vital energy. According to Chinese medical theory, the body is animated by energy. The chi circulates throughout the body along specific pathways called meridians. There are twelve principle meridians in the body, each connecting with a major organ system. Disease results when the flow of chi, for whatever reason, is blocked. By stimulating points that lie on the meridian pathways, the balance and flow of chi is normalized, restoring the mind and body to a state of health. After a diagnosis has been made, the acupuncturist chooses points dictated by the location of the disease, the channels involved in the complaint, and according to individual properties of certain points. Recent research suggests that acupuncture may stimulate the release of pain- relieving hormones/chemicals. It may also affect the functioning of internal organs via the nervous system.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are extremely thin. They are inserted quickly and shallowly. People are usually amazed that they feel so little. Only sterile disposable needles are used.

How many treatments will I need?

That depends upon the duration, severity, and nature of your complaint. You may need only a single treatment for an acute condition. A series of five to fifteen treatments may resolve many chronic problems. Some degenerative conditions may require many treatments over time.
