Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also known as chronic fatigue immune deficiency syndrome, is a complex disease involving multiple systems in the body. It is a condition that affects the neurological system, immune system, and the muscular systems of the body.

There is no known cause, no medical test to identify it, as well as no known medical treatment. CFS affects one million people in the United States according to the Centers for Disease control, while approximately ten million people have symptoms similar to chronic fatigue but do not meet the full criteria.

Normally, fatigue is characterized by:

  • Lack of energy
  • Feelings of muscle weakness
  • Slowed movements or central nervous system reactions

Fatigue can also trigger serious mental exhaustion. Persistent fatigue can cause a lack of mental clarity (or feeling of mental “fuzziness”), difficulty concentrating, and in some cases, memory loss. Most patients experience a major increase in their symptoms in the winter months. This is because in general Chronic Fatigue is due to depleted Qi, and according to Chinese Medicine the Qi in nature is at the lowest point in the winter.

Conventional medicine has no successful treatment for the syndrome as a whole. Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment not only helps the symptoms, but also boosts your immune system. In a study reported in the journal Medical Acupuncture: A Journal for Physicians by Physicians, results showed the functional level of the patients improved and they reported both improved sleep and energy. The duration of the reported effectiveness of the acupuncture treatments was lengthened as the treatments progressed. The researchers therefore concluded that acupuncture can be a useful tool for the management of chronic fatigue syndrome.
